Hervey Bay Sailing Club

The Hervey Bay Sailing Club was formed in 1968 when a group of sailors who wanted to sail found they didn't have a club to sail with.

The Club House for the first 6 seasons was a tent erected on the beach on Sundays and the club soon grew in popularity.

In 1974 plans were passed by the local Council for a Club House to be built on the land at the present site which was at the time a lease set down for surf lifesaving. The club was planned to be built in two stages and in 1974 half of the existing boatshed was built by the club volunteers.

The existing HBSC Clubhouse was completed in 1977 when the Club hosted Australian Catamaran week. Since that time numerous State and National Titles have been sailed from the Club. Monohull Classes including Herons, Tasars, Corsairs, Sabots, MG 14 and Lasers, and Catamaran Classes including Cobras, A Class, Nacras and Arrows have all enjoyed highly successful State and National events. In 1990 91 HBSC hosted the first World Championship for Nacra Catamarans.

In 1981 the first Bay to Bay Yacht Race was held and this has occurred every year since with approximately 140 entries each year.

The 19th Bay to Bay in 1999 saw a record fleet of 230 Trailable Yachts start the race from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay for what is now the largest event of its kind in Australia.

In November 2018 the club successfully hosted the inaugural A-Cat classic world title in conjunction with the A-Cat world title which is now dominated by the foiling discipline.

In supporting the great sport of sailing, the Hervey Bay Sailing Club has developed a proud tradition of family participation, with a Nation wide reputation for excellence in Race Management and contributed substantially to the well being of the Community.
